Kuala lumpur: Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be attending the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur later this month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed today. He stated that Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak will represent Putin at the event.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar shared this information during a media briefing with local and international editors, putting an end to speculation regarding Putin's attendance. Previously, Putin had expressed to Anwar that he was seriously considering joining the regional meeting. The summit, scheduled from October 26 to 28, is expected to host an extensive gathering of world leaders, including United States President Donald Trump and leaders from ASEAN member states.
Anwar also confirmed that Myanmar's acting President Senior General Min Aung Hlaing will not be attending, reinforcing ASEAN's commitment to the five-point consensus addressing Myanmar's political crisis.
In another segment of the briefing, Anwar commended Japan for its support in the reconstruction efforts in Gaza following a recent ceasefire, under the Cooperation Among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD) framework. He expressed his intent to discuss further initiatives with Japan's new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, acknowledging Japan's consistent support of humanitarian causes.
Anwar highlighted Japan's readiness to engage in the reconstruction, noting its significance in the broader context of international cooperation. He emphasized that Japan's efforts in supporting Gaza's reconstruction are deserving of recognition.
Addressing another key issue, Anwar mentioned that the topic of cross-border online scams will be a significant agenda item at the summit. ASEAN leaders aim to consolidate efforts to tackle this growing transnational threat, which has implications for regional stability, economic health, and overall wellbeing.
The Prime Minister is also scheduled for bilateral talks with various world leaders on issues concerning trade, regional security, and humanitarian cooperation during the ASEAN Summit.
