Quarterly Performance Disclosure Could Boost Confidence In Tabung Haji

Kuala lumpur: Tabung Haji (TH) should announce its financial and investment performance on a quarterly basis -- as practised by the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) -- as a measure to strengthen transparency and boost depositor confidence. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr. Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid emphasized that such disclosures would allow depositors to monitor and assess TH's financial performance regularly, providing a clearer view of the institution's fund management. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Mohd Afzanizam highlighted that the EPF regularly announces its fund performance and investment returns on a quarterly basis. Furthermore, the EPF discloses other operational metrics such as the number of new contributors and new employers making contributions. He suggested that TH could adopt similar practices to enhance transparency further. Dr. Mohd Afzanizam stressed the importance of regular information sharing to inspire depositor confidence. He stated, "I believe that the consist ent sharing of information would help strengthen confidence in TH, as demonstrated by the EPF." Confidence in TH is crucial, given its substantial depositor base of approximately 9.8 million and its connections to the country's financial system and capital market. He also noted that TH, like other government-linked investment companies (GLICs), plays a significant role in the capital market, including the bond and equity markets, which are interlinked with the banking system. On July 29, the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on TH released its comprehensive 211-page report investigating the management and operations of the institution from 2014 to 2020. A special sitting of the Dewan Rakyat is scheduled for tomorrow (Aug 11) to debate the findings of this report.
