Kuala lumpur: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa today launched the Federal Territories Building Repurposing and Adaptive Reuse Policy (RE_NEW) and the Kuala Lumpur Building Repurposing Guidelines.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the policy is designed to give heritage buildings a new lease on life, while also addressing environmental concerns by reducing carbon emissions and preserving the city's distinct identity. Dr Zaliha emphasized the importance of repurposing structurally sound buildings with heritage value and economic potential, rather than opting for demolition and new development.

The policy, which Dr Zaliha unveiled at Rumah Hijau, Perdana Botanical Gardens, provides a variety of incentives to developers and operators. These include reduced development charges, expedited approvals, incentive-based rental rates for SMEs and communities, recognition for low-carbon initiatives, and green matching grants.

Dr Zaliha noted that the policy was influenced by her visit to Italy in May, where the Federal Territory was acknowledged as a leader in implementing the Baukultur concept outside of Europe.
