Kuala lumpur: Former Tabung Haji chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim is set to be released this evening after the authorities decided not to extend his remand period, as confirmed by his lawyer, Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the police's request to prolong Abdul Azeez's remand for an additional three days, under Section 420 of the Penal Code, was denied. The former Baling Member of Parliament is anticipated to be freed before 5 pm today, following the expiration of his prior remand.

Amer Hamzah emphasized that they strongly opposed the remand extension, highlighting Abdul Azeez's willingness to cooperate fully with the police whenever required. He stated that the investigation could persist without needing to remand Abdul Azeez, and if further evidence was necessary, Abdul Azeez was prepared to present himself at Bukit Aman at any moment.

Previously, Abdul Azeez and two former Tabung Haji officers were remanded for two days to support the investigation into a fraud case concerning TH hibah.

Regarding the attire Abdul Azeez wore during his arraignment on Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) related charges, Amer Hamzah clarified that his client was under police custody for remand proceedings, adhering to police protocols. Abdul Azeez has provided statements on more than ten occasions and remains committed to aiding the authorities in their investigation.
