Residents Felt Tremors Before 60-Metre Slope Collapse In Seputeh

Seputeh: Residents of an old apartment in Taman United, Seputeh here, felt tremors shortly before a 60-metre slope collapsed, crushing two cars and several motorcycles this morning.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, one of the residents, Lim Yuet Ming, 74, said she was at home when she felt the tremors but did not realise what had happened until a friend contacted her. Lim, who has lived in the area for over three decades, mentioned that this was the first time they had experienced a landslide.

Another resident, Foo Le Choo, 70, only noticed the incident upon returning from the market. Foo described the scene with police and fire department presence and initially thought there was a medical emergency. She was alarmed upon discovering the landslide and checked on her son, leading to their evacuation due to safety concerns. Foo lives in the inherited home with her two children and expressed anxiety over their safety, especially with the continuous rain.

A resident known as Ooi, 60, highlighted longstanding issues with the apartment's drainage system and noted that the ageing infrastructure has exacerbated the situation. Ooi urged authorities to take preventive measures to avoid further incidents, citing concerns over nearby houses and the potential for more collapses.

BERNAMA News Agency reported that over 100 residents were ordered to evacuate from the low-cost apartment following the landslide and continuous rain. The incident was reported to the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department's Operations Centre at 11.02 am, prompting a response team to be dispatched to the scene. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) stated that water diversion works are being conducted to prevent further soil movement. They also visited the affected sites, including Jalan Sepadu 6, Jalan Sepadu 7, and Jalan Medang Tanduk, to assess the situation and implement immediate actions. Although the landslide at Jalan Medang Tanduk occurred on private land, DBKL assured that mitigation measures would be taken for the safety of residents.
