Gerik: The results of water samples from Sungai Perak at the Kampung Sungai Papan Bridge in Gerik, which recently turned bluish and is believed to have been caused by pollution, will be known on Monday. State Science, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman Teh Kok Lim stated that the water sample was collected by the Perak Department of Environment (DOE), while further investigations are being conducted by the DOE and the Perak Department of Minerals and Geoscience (JMG).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, this incident marks the first occurrence of its kind, and the water sample is currently being analysed by the Chemistry Department, which has been instructed to expedite the analysis. Teh Kok Lim mentioned during a press briefing at the Green Tech Perak 2025 Programme held at the Sultan Azlan Shah Roundabout, Meru Raya, that the bluish tint in the river is suspected to have resulted from an overflow from a water retention pond after several days of heavy rain.
The unusual discoloration of Sungai Perak gained public attention on October 21, when photos of the river at the Kampung Sungai Papan Bridge, situated about five kilometres north of Kampung Air Ganda, Gerik, went viral on Facebook.
