RM16.1 Million Allocated to Non-Muslim Houses of Worship in Penang Since 2016: Chow

Penang: The Penang government, through the Trust Fund for Non-Muslim Houses of Worship (RIBI), has approved 411 applications amounting to RM16.114 million since 2016. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasized the allocation as a testament to the government's dedication to supporting the welfare of RIBI institutions and sustaining their social, cultural, and heritage roles.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the financial assistance aims to alleviate the financial burden on RIBI managements in handling construction, maintenance, and emergency-related expenses. Chow highlighted that non-Muslim houses of worship often depend on contributions from devotees, corporate sponsorships, and public donations, while conservation and renovation work require substantial funding and specialized expertise, especially for older buildings with heritage elements.

Chow further explained that financial constraints could lead to delayed maintenance, posing safety risks to users and devotees. Therefore, the financial aid is vital to ensure repairs are conducted safely and systematically. He made these remarks during the Penang Trust Fund/RIBI mock cheque presentation ceremony at Auditorium F, Komtar. State Social Development, Welfare, and Non-Muslim Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Kim, who also chairs the Trust Fund for RIBI Committee, was present.

Chow also announced the digital transformation of the RIBI application process, which has transitioned from a manual to a digital platform. The eRIBI system, developed by the Penang Harmoni Corporation (HARMONICO), marks a significant advancement in streamlining public service delivery. Since its launch in August 2022, eRIBI has evolved into a comprehensive platform for financial assistance applications, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing administrative costs.

During the event, 78 RIBIs received financial assistance totaling RM2.495 million. Chow expressed hope that the funds would be effectively used for construction, repair, or maintenance works to preserve the state's architectural heritage and cultural identity. He urged all RIBI management bodies to cooperate fully with the committee by adhering to procedures and technical standards during project implementation to ensure safety and smooth progress.
