Kuala Lumpur:The RM400 million allocation to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) under Budget 2027 is set to focus on improving green spaces and public amenities to enhance the well-being and quality of life for city residents.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prof Dr Melasutra Md Dali from the Universiti Malaya emphasized the importance of this allocation in making the federal capital more sustainable and inclusive. The plans involve creating 48 hectares of new green spaces, preserving existing parks, and upgrading public amenities and housing, all aimed at enhancing residents' quality of life.
Dr. Melasutra highlighted the necessity of implementing these projects with attention to challenges like high-density development, cost of living, and access to public amenities. She stressed that green spaces should provide recreational opportunities, support biodiversity, and contribute to urban climate resilience, with equitable access for all, including senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Dr. Gobi Krishna Sinniah from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia noted that the development of 22 kilometers of covered walkways could promote active mobility and reduce dependency on private vehicles. These walkways are expected to support tourism and boost economic activity for small businesses along their routes. He also endorsed the green space initiatives, seeing them as a way to encourage physical activity and balance development with environmental conservation.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the RM400 million allocation during the tabling of Budget 2027, with funds earmarked for the creation of new green spaces and covered walkways connecting key landmarks such as the National Mosque, Dataran Merdeka, and Central Market.
