Kahang: The RM66 million wildlife crossing project in Jalan Kahang-Mersing is expected to be completed in February 2028 and is believed to be able to reduce wildlife collisions (roadkill), thus protecting property and saving the lives of road users.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon stated that the 1.2-kilometre crossing, featuring an eight-metre high and 200-metre long flyover, would enable wildlife to safely cross the road through the space beneath the flyover. Ling emphasized the Johor State Government's commitment to balancing development with public safety and the preservation of the state's natural and wildlife treasures.
Ling reported that as of June 29, the project had achieved around 10.12 percent progress, assuring that he has been closely monitoring its advancement. He also urged road users to remain vigilant, particularly at night and on routes near wildlife habitats, to prevent further incidents.
The urgency of the project was underscored by a recent incident involving a female elephant estimated to be five years old, which died after being struck by a Perodua Bezza on a Felda Nitar road in Mersing. The accident, which occurred at 2:28 am, deeply affected Malaysians, as the elephant's grieving mother stayed by its side for about seven hours before the carcass was buried.
