Penang: The Works Ministry has approved a special allocation of RM8.8 million for slope repair works at landslide-prone locations in the Timur Laut and Barat Daya districts in Penang this year. State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari announced this development following a request submitted to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi on April 16 to address high-risk slopes identified across the state.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the approval allows for funding of Phase 2, amounting to RM8.8 million. This is an increase of RM4.9 million compared to last year's allocation, enabling the Public Works Department (JKR) to carry out essential slope repair works at landslide-affected locations. The repairs will commence promptly, with particular attention to high-risk roads such as Jalan Batu Ferringhi, to ensure the safety of road users.
A total of 15 projects are set to take place in the Timur Laut district at a cost of RM7.6 million, while a project in the Barat Daya district is valued at RM1.18 million. These projects involve key federal routes, including Jalan Yahya Petra, Jalan Batu Ferringhi, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, and Jalan Paya Terubong. Each site has been selected based on risk assessments conducted by JKR in conjunction with technical agencies such as the Minerals and Geoscience Department.
Work at several sites began in August, with seven projects expected to be completed by the end of this year. The remaining nine projects are scheduled for completion next year. Priority is given to slopes that have been classified as high-risk and pose potential dangers to motorists.
The main components of the projects include soil investigation, site clearing, and slope repair using technical methods such as tieback wall, soil nail, and rubble wall, depending on site conditions. Zairil also advised road users to plan their journeys carefully and adhere to safety instructions and signage around construction areas.
