Petaling jaya: The possibility of national track cycling ace Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang rejoining the Road To Gold (RTG) programme will be evaluated after the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, as announced by RTG coordinator Datuk Stuart Ramalingam. The RTG meeting, which will follow the Games scheduled from September 19 to October 4, will address this along with other agenda items. According to BERNAMA News Agency, the meeting will act as a post-mortem of the athletes' performances and achievements throughout the season, and also discuss strategic plans for the following year. Datuk Stuart Ramalingam explained that the process of being listed in the RTG is structured and phased, emphasizing his role as an administrator of the rules and process. He expressed hope that if Datuk Azizulhasni meets all the criteria, he would be welcomed back into the programme. Ramalingam highlighted the significance of the upcoming year as it marks the Olympic qualification period for several sports. He stressed that sensitive matters requiring thorough consideration would be addressed in the meeting. He assured that Azizulhasni, famously known as The Pocket Rocketman, will continue to receive backing from the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) and the National Sports Council (MSN) while awaiting a decision on his RTG status. Previously, the Malaysian National Cycling Federation announced plans to submit an official application to KBS and MSN for Azizulhasni's inclusion in the RTG programme, aiming at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The cyclist, who earned a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and was part of the RTG programme for Paris 2024, opted to pursue his career as a professional cyclist last year. Recently, the 38-year-old former world champion captured attention by winning gold in the men's keirin at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, ending a 16-year wait to become a Commonwealth Games champion.
