Kuala lumpur: The operator of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is conducting a final market study to determine ticket fares, with the final pricing and fare mechanism to be announced closer to the service's launch, Malaysia's Transport Minister Anthony Loke said. This statement was made during a joint press conference with Singapore acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow, where they unveiled the first of the eight RTS Link train sets at the Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO), a joint venture between Prasarana RTS Operations Sdn Bhd and SMRT RTS Pte Ltd, is tasked with operating the RTS Link, a cross-border rail connecting Malaysia and Singapore. Loke highlighted the initiative's objective to shift more commuters to public transport for crossing the Causeway, thereby enhancing connectivity between the two nations.
Loke emphasized the Malaysian government's advocacy for a more open payment system aligning with global trends in public transport. Such a system would facilitate multiple modes of payment for commuters. Singapore's acting Transport Minister Siow noted that the fares should be commercially determined by RTSO, considering demand, supply, and operational costs.
RTSO is also finalizing the operating hours for the train service, which will run between Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru and Woodlands North in Singapore, with considerations for early commuters. Loke clarified that no urban rail service would operate 24 hours, citing the necessity for maintenance and engineering work during certain hours.
The project, Loke added, is not only set to improve the lives of cross-border commuters but also symbolizes the strengthened ties between Malaysia and Singapore. He remarked on the project's role amidst global trade protectionism, emphasizing the building of connectivity and bridges over barriers. This initiative is a significant element of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), further reinforcing bilateral relations.
