Rubio Commends Malaysia’s Leadership in ASEAN Amid Border Conflict Resolution

Kuala lumpur: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised Malaysia for its effective leadership in chairing this year's ASEAN, highlighting its role in resolving the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict. He emphasized ASEAN's importance as a primary platform for US engagement with the region.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Rubio commended Malaysia's chairmanship, noting its contribution to the de-escalation and expected resolution of the Cambodia-Thailand conflict. A joint declaration on a ceasefire is anticipated to be signed by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet during the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur. The signing will be witnessed by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump.

The longstanding border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, which recently escalated into a military confrontation, has been a focal issue. On July 28, Anwar hosted a crucial meeting in Putrajaya with Manet and then Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, successfully easing tensions.

The imminent ceasefire is regarded as a significant achievement for ASEAN, averting broader military escalation and safeguarding civilians along the border. Malaysia's leadership as ASEAN Chair has been instrumental in facilitating this resolution. The 47th ASEAN Summit is being held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, with Malaysia hosting this year's event. The Philippines is set to take over as ASEAN Chair next year.
