Kuala lumpur: The Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW) has outlined five pillars and 10 key commitments under the Rural Youth Resolution 2035 to strengthen the rural youth development agenda as a cornerstone of the country's progress.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang stated that the resolution was formulated following the 2026 Rural Youth Convention. This event brought together rural youth leaders, educational institutions, government agencies, industry representatives, and academics. The first pillar emphasizes leadership, patriotism, and volunteerism among rural youth, aiming to increase their involvement in decision-making processes, including representation on the National Youth Consultative Council (MPBN).
The second pillar addresses the economy, entrepreneurship, and income, focusing on the employment opportunities for young people. The third pillar targets education, including Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and future-ready skills. The resolution also includes pillars on digitalization, artificial intelligence (AI) and innovation, and holistic wellbeing and inclusion.
During the launch of the resolution and the closing ceremony of the Rural Youth Convention, which was also attended by KKDW deputy secretary-general (Development) Datuk Dr Roslan Mahmood, Rubiah detailed the 10 commitments under these pillars. These commitments involve efforts to enhance governance and leadership to support sustainable rural development. Other commitments include the development of high-impact rural economies, fostering world-class entrepreneurship, and strengthening education and human capital.
The commitments further extend to enhancing training, skills, and employability, equipping rural youth with AI skills, promoting environmental sustainability, and developing a future-ready ecosystem. Rubiah emphasized the government's aim to help rural areas thrive through economic and commercial activities, ensuring young people have the opportunity to shape their futures. She stressed the importance of not sidelining rural youth, as they are vital to the country's future.
At the opening of the Rural Youth Convention on September 1, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi encouraged rural youth to explore high-value sectors and transition from being opportunity seekers to opportunity creators. He highlighted the necessity for industry-relevant skills, such as problem-solving and value creation, in addition to academic qualifications, to keep pace with rapid developments.
