Kuala lumpur: The United States (US) is bringing a slice of its state fair culture to Sabah, offering locals a taste of American food, games, music, and community festivities as part of celebrations marking 250 years of US independence. Charg© d'Affaires at the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, David Gamble, said 'The Great American Sabah State Fair', held at Padang Merdeka here today, was designed to give Sabahans an experience familiar to many Americans while celebrating the close ties between the two countries.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Gamble expressed that Sabah was chosen for this celebration as 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of US independence, coinciding with Malaysia's recent celebration of its 69th National Day. He emphasized that the event aimed to go big and provide Sabahans with a genuine American state fair experience. Gamble highlighted that US state fairs typically feature carnival-style games, food, entertainment, and family activities, many of which were recreated at the Sabah event.
The fair showcased an array of activities, including an apple pie contest, hot dog eating contest, games, and performances, with approximately 40 vendors offering food, arts, crafts, and other products. Gamble noted that the fair provided a space for families and friends to enjoy time together while experiencing American culture. He also pointed out the multicultural similarities between the US and Sabah, acknowledging the diverse communities that shape both societies.
Gamble, who previously visited Sabah during the Kaamatan celebration, admired the state's success in authentically preserving and celebrating its diverse cultures. He praised Sabah's natural and genuine atmosphere, which attracts many Americans and makes them feel comfortable and happy.
The event was kicked off by the Freedom250 Run, with around 600 participants taking part. The fair also featured performances by the Pacific Partnership Band, a convoy of more than 50 Harley-Davidson motorcycles, DJ performances, and other activities, with thousands of visitors expected to attend throughout the evening.
