SARAWAK ASPIRES TO EMULATE EFFICIENCY OF YOKOHAMA PORT – UGGAH

Sarawak aspires to emulate the efficiency of Japan’s Yokohama Port, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said following a state visit to the port in Kanagawa prefecture today.

Senior port officials Yasuyuki Saito and Masahiko Shirai briefed the state delegation about the port, a statement said.

According to Saito, it is one of Japan’s two key gateway ports for container handling.

“It is governed by the City of Yokohama and operated by Yokohama-Kawasaki International Port (YKIP). Yokohama Port boasts impressive statistics, having handled 2.6 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) last year.

“Notably, it achieved the top position in the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) in 2020, boasting an impressive container handling productivity of 40 GMPH (gross moves per hour),” Saito said.

Meanwhile, Uggah, who is also Infrastructure and Port Development State Minister said in the statement that Sarawak aspires to attain a similar level of container handling productivity as the Yokohama Port.

“The Sarawak government remains fully committed to its port development agenda. This entails upgrading the facilities and equipment of its ports, fostering growth and efficiency within our port infrastructure,” Uggah said.
