Sarawak Customs Seizes Ganja Worth Over RM2.5 Mln In Miri

Miri: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) of Sarawak seized ganja (cannabis) worth RM2.578 million when it raided the premises of a courier company in Miri on May 13.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya stated that the 9.30 am raid was executed after receiving intelligence from the Air Cargo Unit of the Miri Customs Branch. Acting on this information, officers from the Miri JKDM Narcotics Unit inspected five unclaimed parcels at a courier service premises located on Jalan Pos, Miri. Upon inspection, they discovered 98 transparent plastic packages suspected to contain ganja, with an estimated weight of 26.313 kilogrammes.

Norizan explained the syndicate's modus operandi involved smuggling drugs from Peninsular Malaysia by using the courier service and falsely declaring them as clothing items to avoid detection. The case is currently being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which stipulates the death penalty upon conviction.
