Sarawak Government Plans New Swinburne Campus for Materials Science Research

Sarawak: The Sarawak government has announced plans to establish a new Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak campus dedicated to materials science research. This initiative focuses on utilizing the latest technology to analyze and transform raw materials into high-value products, as revealed by Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, this development aligns with Sarawak's broader agenda aimed at advancing research and innovation in various sectors, including energy, hydrogen, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), and biomass. The proposed materials science research center is expected to enhance research capabilities and foster local expertise in the field.

Premier Abang Johari mentioned that while the plan has not yet been officially approved, a site comprising 10 acres (4.047 hectares) has been identified for the campus. This site could potentially expand to 15 acres (6.07 hectares) to accommodate the project's needs. The campus will serve as a hub for producing researchers specializing in materials science.

The announcement was made during the university's 25th Anniversary gala dinner, attended by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Swinburne University of Technology vice-chancellor and president Prof Pascale Quester, and Swinburne Sarawak's Board of Directors chairman, Datuk Amar Jaul Samion.
