Sarawak Identifies 15,000 Hectares Of Land For Padi Cultivation

Sarawak: Sarawak has identified approximately 15,000 hectares of land with strong potential for commercial padi cultivation. Sarawak's Deputy Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Martin Ben, announced that a total of 6,176 hectares has already been approved by the Sarawak Padi and Rice Taskforce for implementation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, during a session at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, Datuk Martin Ben stated that 2,325.32 hectares of state land have been officially gazetted as designated padi cultivation areas. This was in response to a query by Datuk Miro Simuh (GPS-Serembu) regarding the long-term food security strategy of the state government and its effectiveness.

Martin highlighted that under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), Sarawak aims to achieve a 60 percent rice self-sufficiency level by 2030. He noted that the progress in the padi and rice industry development has been promising, supported by initiatives such as the gazettement of padi cultivation areas, development of complete irrigation infrastructure, adoption of high-yielding padi seeds, and promotion of digital technology.
