Sarawak: Sarawak is intensifying strategic cooperation with Penang in an effort to strengthen the country's semiconductor industry supply chain and ecosystem, particularly in the electrical and electronics (E and E) sector. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan emphasized the cooperation between the two states in sharing expertise and strength in the semiconductor industry, aiming to drive Malaysia's aspirations to become a regional high-tech hub.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the two states are focusing on completing the entire semiconductor supply chain, including research and development (R and D), talent development, and supporting infrastructure. Awang Tengah noted that Penang hosts numerous global companies in the industry, while Sarawak has capabilities that complement the semiconductor supply chain.
Awang Tengah, who also serves as the Sarawak Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment, shared these insights with reporters after officiating at the Sarawak Semiconductor Investment Forum, attended by industry players from both Penang and Sarawak. The event was organized by the Sarawak Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED) in collaboration with InvestSarawak, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), and the Malaysian Semiconductor Industry Association.
Awang Tengah highlighted MINTRED's efforts to transform Sarawak into an advanced technology and semiconductor investment hub, aligning with the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. The forum aims to showcase Sarawak's investment-ready infrastructure, industrial roadmap, and public-private partnership opportunities in the semiconductor sector.
Sarawak is committed to developing a fully integrated and resilient semiconductor ecosystem by focusing on high-value segments such as chip design, compound semiconductors, packaging, and advanced testing. Earlier, the Sarawak Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development II visited Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow to discuss collaboration opportunities in the semiconductor industry.
