Sarawak JBPM Strengthens Emergency Response With 79 Pct NART

Sarawak: The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has achieved a 79 per cent National Average Response Time (NART), showcasing the department's operational readiness across the state.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, JBPM director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad reported that from January to March 2026, the department maintained an average response time of eight to nine minutes for bushfire incidents. This efficiency underscores the department's adept asset mobilisation and the unwavering commitment of its personnel to provide swift and effective responses to emergency calls.

Despite these achievements, Nor Hisham noted challenges in five isolated cases where fires occurred 25 to 35 kilometres from the nearest fire station, resulting in response times of 20 to 25 minutes due to distance and access issues. One particularly notable case involved the Daro Fire and Rescue Station, which took three hours and 32 minutes to reach a remote location 231 kilometres away.

Nor Hisham highlighted these instances to illustrate the operational challenges faced in certain areas of Sarawak, where extensive geographical distances separate settlements from fire stations. He emphasized the importance of strategic cooperation with Volunteer Fire Brigades (PBS) and Community Fire Brigades in enhancing emergency response effectiveness.

He pointed out that this collaboration is crucial in providing initial on-scene responses, particularly in communities far from fire stations. The involvement of PBS and Community Fire Brigades allows for early intervention, helping to contain fires before the arrival of the fire engine, thus preventing further spread.

Nor Hisham reiterated JBPM's commitment to improving operations, enhancing team capabilities, and expanding community involvement to ensure rapid and effective emergency responses, ultimately safeguarding the well-being of the people and the environment.
