Sarawak Pepper R&D Complex Set for Completion with New MOF Funding

Sarawak: The long-stalled Pepper Research and Development (R and D) Complex project in Sarawak is set to be completed after the Ministry of Finance (MOF) approved a new allocation to resume construction works.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani announced that the project, which is currently almost 80 percent complete, had faced delays after the previous contractor ceased work. The new funding will enable the project to continue, transforming the complex into a pivotal R and D center for pepper development in the region.

Minister Johari emphasized the importance of completing the complex, stating that it will serve as both a research and management hub, addressing various issues related to pepper cultivation. He conveyed this information in response to a query from Datuk Seri Dr. Richard Riot anak Jaem (GPS-Serian) regarding the ministry's initiatives to aid pepper smallholders in reviving the industry in Sarawak.

Highlighting the significance of good agricultural practices, Johari noted that these are essential for both smallholders and large estates. The development of the complex is deemed crucial for establishing standard operating procedures (SOPs) in the pepper industry.
