Sarawak: Sarawak recorded another rabies-related death among humans, bringing the cumulative case total to 91 cases, with 84 deaths since the epidemic was declared in July 2017. The state health department reported that the new death occurred at the Sarawak General Hospital, involving a 44-year-old man who worked as a laborer and lived alone in Kota Samarahan.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the patient began experiencing symptoms on February 15, including difficulty walking, lack of appetite, pain in his left knee, weakness, and dizziness. On February 16, he was taken to the Sarawak Heart Centre in Samarahan before being referred to the Sarawak General Hospital on the same day. His condition worsened, requiring breathing assistance by February 22.
Investigations revealed that the patient had no history of being bitten by dogs or cats but was known to feed stray dogs. He also cared for 15 dogs at home, one of which died in early February. The remains were buried by his neighbor, and the remaining 14 dogs have been isolated for observation.
