Sarawak: Sarawak must strengthen its capabilities in advanced chip design and digital technologies to remain competitive as global powers intensify the contest for dominance in the semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said. He highlighted the critical need for Sarawak to enhance its technological capabilities to secure its place in the rapidly evolving global economy.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari emphasized that the global struggle for control over chip manufacturing and satellite-based data systems is shaping the future economy, with countries investing heavily in technological leadership. He remarked, "Those who can command and manufacture new chips will command the digital economy," during a speech at the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation's (SDEC) fifth-anniversary celebration.
He noted that the rapid growth of AI has created an unprecedented demand for high-performance chips capable of processing massive datasets, resulting in new material innovations such as gallium nitride (GaN). GaN can withstand the heat generated by complex data operations, which is a significant advancement over traditional silicon materials. Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) is conducting research on white wafer GaN-based chips, marking the state's initial steps toward building its own technological capacity to support emerging AI industries.
Abang Johari further explained that control over satellite technology will also determine the future economic direction, as it collects and transmits vast amounts of data. Sarawak's strategic location in the tropics positions it well for satellite development and launch activities.
With global competition intensifying, he stressed the need for Sarawak to continue investing in research, advanced manufacturing, and digital infrastructure to safeguard its economic resilience. "Our future depends on our ability to master these technologies. The world is moving fast, and we must prepare ourselves," he concluded.
