Sarawak: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has welcomed the Federal Government’s agreement in principle to increase the state’s parliamentary seats. He said the proposal to expand representation, potentially up to one-third of total parliamentary seats, remains entirely under federal jurisdiction, but Sarawak is ready for further discussions.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Premier expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the agreement to increase the seats. He mentioned that whether the increase reaches one-third would be subject to negotiation. He emphasized Sarawak’s readiness to engage in further discussions when the federal government is prepared, but also noted the possibility of waiting if immediate action is not feasible.
The Prime Minister previously indicated that the government had agreed in principle to increase the number of parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak, considering the number of voters in the two states. He noted that there is no current commitment to increasing the number of parliamentary seats in Sabah and Sarawak to constitute one-third of the total seats.
Currently, Sabah holds 25 parliamentary seats, while Sarawak has 31.
