Kuala lumpur: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today emphasized the crucial role scholars must play in guiding societies toward peace, unity, and justice amidst global challenges. He highlighted that the duty of scholars extends beyond preserving knowledge to defending truth, countering hate with wisdom, replacing ignorance with understanding, and building bridges in place of walls.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Zahid addressed the significance of unity among scholars, intellectuals, and leaders of thought, stressing the shared goal of standing together as an ummah despite differences. He delivered these remarks in his keynote address at the opening of the 3rd Council of Southeast Asia Scholars held at the Federal Territory Mosque.
The event saw the presence of prominent figures such as Muslim World League Secretary-General Sheikh Dr Mohammad Abdul Kareem al-Issa and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. Ahmad Zahid reiterated Malaysia's commitment as the ASEAN Chairman in 2025 to fostering peace in the region, noting the country's efforts in facilitating reconciliation and encouraging dialogue in various regional conflicts.
On the matter of Palestine, he reaffirmed Malaysia's stance against illegal settlements and the 'Greater Israel' agenda, while highlighting the nation's recent pledge of an additional RM100 million in humanitarian aid, raising the total contribution to over RM200 million.
Ahmad Zahid also called on scholars to engage in joint research and cross-border academic exchanges to address pressing challenges like climate change, inequality, and digital disruption in Southeast Asia. He urged that scholarship should actively influence society, shape policies, and uplift communities.
In his welcoming address, Mohd Na'im mentioned the joint organization of the 3rd Council of Southeast Asia Scholars by the Malaysian government and the Muslim World League, continuing a partnership that began in 2022. This year's conference gathered participants, including academics, political leaders, and religious figures from around the world, further enhancing the event's prominence.
