Kuching: The Science Castle Malaysia 2025 programme in Kuching today aims to expand STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education access for students in Sarawak, particularly those with strong potential in research and innovation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ajinomoto (Malaysia) Berhad executive director and chief production officer Yong Kum Cheng highlighted that previous editions of Science Castle Malaysia faced significant challenges regarding the participation of students from Sabah and Sarawak due to cost and logistical issues. Speaking at a press conference following the programme's launch, Yong emphasized Ajinomoto's belief in technology as a cornerstone for nation-building, with Science Castle serving as a platform to support this objective.
Yong stated that the programme strives to be inclusive, welcoming students from various regions such as Kuching, Sibu, and rural areas to engage in hands-on experiences alongside theoretical learning. He noted that activities like factory visits and sessions with industry experts enable students to envision their future career paths and understand the practical application of their academic knowledge.
Students specializing in biology, chemistry, or physics can see the relevance of their studies in fields like automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and natural resource management, Yong added.
Meanwhile, Science Castle Malaysia project chief, Muhammad Basril Muhammad Asri, noted that the programme is open to secondary school students without specific themes or criteria, as long as projects are related to science and technology. The focus is on cultivating interest through applied, hands-on learning rather than complex assessments.
Muhammad Basril reported that nearly 500 students participated this year, reflecting strong enthusiasm and confidence among Sarawakian students in sharing their ideas. He asserted the importance of equal access to education, allowing every student to explore interests and shape their future in science and technology, regardless of their background or location.
Science Castle Malaysia 2025, co-organised by Leave A Nest Malaysia and Ajinomoto, is extending its reach into Sarawak and Sabah to enhance STEM education. Ajinomoto also offers other educational programmes focused on nutrition, food innovation, and environmental conservation.
