Screening of High-Risk Travellers Aims to Prevent Nipah Virus Spread, Says Health Minister

Kuala lumpur: The implementation of targeted health screening on travellers from high-risk countries at all international entry points is a preventive measure to curb the potential spread of the Nipah virus in the country, says Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, he stated that although the measure was not recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) at present, the government's proactive approach was crucial to maintain the country's level of preparedness and public confidence in the national healthcare system. Dr Dzulkefly emphasized that the ministry has adopted this proactive and pre-emptive approach, even without a firm recommendation from WHO, to ensure early detection of any possible infection.

Dzulkefly assured that the national healthcare system is ready to face any potential developments related to the threat of infectious diseases. He highlighted the importance of preventive measures based on the principle of layered control, which includes continuous monitoring, early detection, contact management, preparedness of healthcare facilities, and effective risk communication.

Addressing a separate issue, Dr Dzulkefly commented on a recent incident involving a food premises in Negeri Sembilan allegedly washing leftover food to be cooked and resold. He stated that the Health Ministry would take firm enforcement action, including issuing compounds and penalties against those exposing the public to serious risks. He reminded all operators to comply with regulations, warning that firm, decisive, and conclusive action would be taken against non-compliance due to the direct risk to public health.

Dr Dzulkefly added that the ministry consistently prioritizes food quality and safety through initiatives like the Clean, Healthy, and Safe (BeSS) programme and ongoing enforcement measures. Despite these efforts, he expressed disappointment over a small number of parties in the industry who tarnish its reputation by neglecting food safety standards.

It was reported that the restaurant in Seremban allegedly involved in the incident had been ordered to close for 14 days starting yesterday by the Negeri Sembilan State Health Department.
