Selangor: The Selangor government is allocating RM54.34 million to enhance flood mitigation projects, involving the addition of 17 new projects, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. He mentioned that among the river basins involved are Sungai Klang (RM16.92 million), Sungai Langat (RM16.51 million), Sungai Selangor (RM5.74 million), Sungai Buloh (RM1 million), as well as Sungai Bernam and Kapar Besar (RM2.8 million).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, "Greater emphasis is given to the Sungai Klang and Sungai Langat river basins, which are facing rapid development, leading to an increased surface water flow. This has resulted in frequent and severe flash floods and monsoon floods." The implementation of these flood mitigation projects will be strengthened through integrated and strategic collaboration with the Federal Government, aiming for holistic and sustainable solutions to control and reduce the risk of flood disasters in Selangor, as stated by Amirudin while tabling Selangor's Budget 2026 at the Selangor State Assembly.
Amirudin also announced an allocation of RM11.51 million to the Selangor Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), along with an additional 10 new projects for technical expertise services to ensure meticulous, integrated, and effective management of river basins. Holistic river basin management is deemed vital for the sustainability of Selangor's water sources, with development needing to be implemented in an integrated manner to preserve, manage, and develop water and land resources across all sectors.
"This approach is designed to maximise socio-economic benefits, ensure resilient and sustainable water-source management, as well as preserving and restoring natural ecosystems," he added. Furthermore, Selangor JPS has been allocated RM12.89 million, with an additional 10 new projects aimed at strengthening the state's drainage system capacity. This focuses on increasing existing drainage capacity in high-risk areas and improving internal drainage systems to handle heavy rainfall and high water flow.
Regarding development in coastal areas, the Selangor Menteri Besar announced a RM4 million allocation to implement 11 new projects for improving and strengthening coastal embankments in affected areas. He highlighted that coastal area development is crucial for ensuring the well-being of residents and the sustainability of the coastal ecosystem. "The phenomenon of climate change and high tides, occurring more frequently, demand more proactive and effective measures to strengthen the state's protective barriers, especially in Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, and Kuala Langat," he stated.
