Selangor Sultan Criticizes Disorderly Conduct of Lawmakers

Selangor: The Sultan of Selangor has called upon Members of Parliament to conduct themselves with respect, dignity, and integrity while representing the rakyat (people). Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah specifically addressed the issue of certain MPs engaging in shouting matches and exhibiting disorderly behavior.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Sultan expressed his disappointment in an interview, stating, "It's a disgrace. Despite numerous calls in the past advising these MPs to behave, some continue to be rowdy." His Royal Highness emphasized the importance of lawmakers serving as role models, particularly for the younger generation, and criticized those who "behave like bullies."

The Sultan's remarks follow an incident last month where two MPs were expelled from Parliament following a verbal altercation. This year has seen multiple instances of chaos within the parliamentary sessions as tempers flared among the lawmakers.

Sultan Sharafuddin stressed that the Dewan Rakyat should exemplify mature democratic discourse, urging MPs to engage in intelligent debate and present constructive ideas without resorting to insults. "Such immaturity will only diminish the trust of the rakyat in the institution," he noted.

The Sultan urged MPs to maintain decorum and debate civilly, while clarifying that he does not intend to interfere with parliamentary proceedings, which is the responsibility of the Speaker. However, he felt compelled to speak out as certain behaviors reflect poorly on leadership and may negatively influence the younger generation. Differences in opinions, he suggested, should be resolved through reason and persuasion.
