Shah alam: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, and Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin expressed sadness over the passing of former Selangor executive councillor and veteran lawyer Datuk V. L. Kandan, who died yesterday.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, His Royal Highness remembered the 89-year-old as a respected veteran lawyer who served Selangor as the Sungai Way assemblyman for two terms from 1974 to 1982. 'He carried out those responsibilities with integrity, upholding the principles of justice and the rule of law,' stated a post on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page today.

The late Kandan, who was the younger brother of former MIC president Tan Sri V. Manickavasagam, was also appointed to the Selangor State Pardons Board. He was active in politics through MIC and contributed significantly to the legal field and community throughout his life.

The Sultan described his passing as a loss to Selangor, especially in law and public service. 'His Royal Highness extends his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and hopes they find strength during this difficult time,' the post read.

MIC vice-president Datuk T. Murugiah, when contacted by Bernama, confirmed Kandan's passing. Born on Aug 8, 1937, Kandan was the younger brother of Manickavasagam, the sixth MIC president. He contributed significantly to politics, public administration, community service, and the legal profession throughout his career.
