Selangor: The Selangor government plans to introduce guidelines on the practice of tariqa (spiritual paths) this year to ensure enforcement against practices that contradict Islamic beliefs, as announced by the state Islamic Affairs and Cultural Innovation Committee chairman, Dr. Mohammad Fahmi Ngah.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, while speaking in the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, Mohammad Fahmi outlined that the guidelines will adhere to the directive from Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. The Sultan has emphasized the necessity for specific regulations or syllabus concerning tasawuf (Sufism) and tariqa practices within the state.
"At the Multaqa Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah: 'Ilmu Tasawuf Merungkai Masalah Ummah' held last November, His Royal Highness highlighted the importance of clear guidelines on tariqa practices," stated Mohammad Fahmi. He further mentioned that one of the resolutions from the gathering was to draft laws, gazette fatwas, and create a special syllabus or guideline to prevent the spread of extremist ideologies and deviant beliefs that could harm Islam's reputation in Selangor.
This announcement came in response to a query from Mu'izzuddeen Mahyiddin (PN-Hulu Bernam) regarding the potential need for an enactment on tariqa orders, akin to the one introduced in Negeri Sembilan. The state government, along with the Selangor State Mufti Department, is hopeful that the upcoming guidelines will be as effective as Negeri Sembilan's Tariqa Tasawuf Enactment 2005.
When Noor Najhan Mohamad Salleh (PN-Sementa) questioned the possible existence of deviant tariqa practices and the measures taken against those involved, Mohammad Fahmi advised that such matters should be directed to the Mufti Department. He also noted that enforcement could not commence until proper guidelines are established, as proving violations related to Islamic beliefs is a complex issue.
"My hope is that these guidelines will help the public distinguish between beneficial and harmful practices, and that enforcement actions can be taken accordingly," he concluded.
