Semiconductor Tariffs and Trade to Top Agenda During Trump’s Malaysia Visit

Kuala lumpur: Semiconductor tariffs, trade, investments, security, and regional stability are expected to be key topics during United States President Donald Trump's visit, according to US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Kagan. Kagan highlighted Malaysia's significant role as a partner for the US, particularly with substantial investments by American companies in the semiconductor sector.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kagan emphasized the recognition of Malaysia's importance, noting that tariffs will be among the topics discussed during Trump's visit. He acknowledged Malaysia's critical role in Western supply chains and mentioned that discussions around maintaining tariff exemptions for Malaysia's semiconductor exports are anticipated.

Kagan, speaking on the sidelines of the US-Malaysia Digital Dialogue, refrained from speculating on the continuation of tariff exemptions but underscored Malaysia's importance as a semiconductor partner for the US, suggesting this relationship is unlikely to change swiftly.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced Trump's arrival in Malaysia on October 26, marking his first trip to Asia since his second presidency began in January 2025. This visit is the first by a US President to Malaysia since Barack Obama's in 2015.

While Kagan remained reserved about potential bilateral meetings, he suggested that a customary meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would occur, indicating expectations of productive discussions.

Malaysia is set to host the 47th ASEAN Summit from October 26 to 28, under the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability.' The summit will bring together leaders from the 10 ASEAN member states and key dialogue partners, including the US, China, South Korea, Japan, and India.
