Kuala lumpur: Several senators today called for the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to place special emphasis on strengthening the national health sector, including increasing the number of medical specialists and nurses, while also enhancing mental health initiatives and the role of the private sector.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Senator Datuk Edward Linggu Bukut emphasized the need for the five-year development plan to specifically focus on providing more doctors, trained nurses, medical specialists, and adequate equipment, particularly for rural communities and remote islands. He highlighted the importance of ensuring these areas do not miss out on accessing quality healthcare.
Senator Noorita Sual underscored the need to address mental health issues among youths, given the economic, social, and digital challenges in the post-pandemic period. She cited Ministry of Health (MOH) data revealing that over 500,000 Malaysians, primarily young people, sought mental healthcare in 2022. Noorita called for a comprehensive strategy to improve access to treatment, raise awareness, and educate communities in order to reduce stigma.
Senator Dr Wan Martina Wan Yusoff pointed out the necessity of revisiting government policies related to the private healthcare sector. She stressed that addressing the rising cost of healthcare and outdated regulations, such as those on drug prices and consultation fees, is crucial for providing equitable and affordable treatment. She also mentioned the significant role of private clinics in supporting government healthcare efforts.
Citing the 2019 National Health and Morbidity Survey, Wan Martina noted that 33.9 percent of Malaysians use private healthcare services, indicating the need for a more comprehensive and inclusive health action plan.
Senator Dr A. Lingeshwaran addressed the issue of workplace bullying among healthcare workers in MOH facilities. He acknowledged MOH's efforts in launching guidelines for managing such issues but stressed the importance of implementing policies that protect whistleblowers. Lingeshwaran suggested establishing a direct hotline to the minister's office for serious complaints, ensuring they are investigated thoroughly.
The Dewan Negara sitting will resume tomorrow.
