Senegal Prohibited from Displaying AFCON Star at 2026 World Cup

Dakar: The F©d©ration Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has barred Senegal's national team from wearing a kit featuring a star above its logo in honour of its Africa Cup of Nations victory at the 2026 World Cup, African football journalist Micky Jnr. said on Sunday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti. "Senegal have been told they cannot wear their AFCON star on their jersey during the FIFA World Cup," the journalist said on X.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Senegalese national football team players play with one star above the logo in honour of winning the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. However, FIFA rules allow the use of continental championship stars only during friendly matches and qualifying competitions, while in the final tournaments under the auspices of the organisation, stars can only be used for winning the World Cup.

It was revealed on Saturday that FIFA has banned the use of stars on the Egyptian national team's uniform, despite the team being seven-time winners of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The World Cup is taking place in the US, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19. The national team of Senegal will play in Group I with the teams of France, Norway, and Iraq.
