Ayer Keroh:The Senior Citizens Bill, aimed at enhancing the physical and mental well-being of elderly individuals, is set to be tabled in the Cabinet soon, according to Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the bill is being crafted to ensure senior citizens receive comprehensive protection in various life aspects, thereby improving their quality of life. The government has existing policies and frameworks for senior citizens, and this bill is seen as a step to further bolster their protection.
The bill, as stated by Nancy after officiating the 2026 National-Level Senior Citizens Day celebration at the Melaka International Trade Centre, specifically targets safeguarding seniors in all aspects. The Social Welfare Department's director-general, Datuk Che Murad Sayang Ramjan, was also present during the event.
Nancy emphasized that the bill signifies the government's dedication to fortifying support and care systems for senior citizens, ensuring these systems remain applicable to current needs and demographic shifts. She also highlighted that seniors should be valued as role models for younger generations to strengthen family values.
Regarding independent speakers, Nancy mentioned that her ministry is ready to collaborate with other parties to ensure speakers at events possess the necessary qualifications. While the responsibility for screening falls under other agencies, the ministry can assist by advising event organizers to ensure speaker calibre.
In a related issue, media reports indicated that police received a report on September 26 regarding an alleged sexual harassment case involving a motivational speaker and a child. Perlis police chief DCP Hamzah Hashim confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 12 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
