Kuala lumpur: The declaration of Sept 15 as an additional public holiday in conjunction with this year's Malaysia Day celebration is seen as a testament to the strengthening spirit of national unity under the MADANI Government. Universiti Putra Malaysia's Social Anthropology Professor, Dr Sarjit Singh Gill, described the announcement as a symbol of the government's commitment to fostering unity among the country's multi-racial society.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sarjit emphasized the importance of the government's efforts in strengthening human relations and mutual respect, as outlined in the Rukun Negara. He noted that Malaysia's diversity is its greatest strength and this additional holiday offers an opportunity for the community to organize social and community activities that enhance unity.
Sarjit, also the deputy chairman of the National Unity and Social Cohesion Cluster at the Akademi Profesor Malaysia (APM), stressed the need for the younger generation's voices to be amplified to create a lasting narrative of unity. This ensures that the message of togetherness remains relevant over time.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in a special announcement streamed live on national televisions and social media platforms, declared Sept 15 as an additional public holiday. This decision honors the spirit of national unity and the significance of Malaysia's formation. The public is encouraged to use the holiday to strengthen family ties or travel within the country.
Private sector employee K. Sivananthan, 37, expressed his excitement about the additional holiday, which offers him more quality time with his family during the school holiday week. He mentioned plans for a family trip, which could also help boost the local economy.
The Malaysia Day 2025 celebration on Sept 16 will be held at the PICCAArena Convention Centre in Butterworth, Penang, featuring various activities aimed at celebrating the country's unity and diversity.
