Seven Landslides Cause Damage to Houses in Kampung Kopungit

Kota kinabalu: A total of seven landslides have been reported in Kampung Kopungit, Kepayan, here since yesterday, resulting in damage to two houses.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Station chief Ordine Gilu reported that the station received information from the Kampung Kopungit Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) and subsequently conducted an inspection with other relevant agencies. Officers from the Sabah Minerals and Geosciences Department determined that the soil structure in the area was unstable.

"If the rainy weather continues, the area remains at high risk of further landslides, which could endanger the safety of residents," Gilu stated. The Fire and Rescue Department, along with involved agencies, has instructed two affected families to relocate to the Kampung Kopungit Village Hall. Continuous monitoring is being carried out, and updates will be provided as needed.

Resident Mazlan Dullah, 37, shared concerns for the safety of his family and neighbours, noting the anxiety that arises with each rainfall. "We have not been able to sleep well since the landslide yesterday. Every time it rains, our hearts race because we are afraid another landslide might occur," said the father of two.

Meanwhile, shop assistant Rahmah Kitin, 45, called on authorities to find a long-term solution, as many residents are hesitant to leave their ancestral land. "We are not rich and cannot afford to buy a new house," expressed the mother of five.
