George town: Seven historic mosques in Penang have been officially gazetted as heritage buildings, with more than RM1.17 million allocated for maintenance and conservation works. Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid announced that the mosques include Masjid Kapitan Keling (RM400,000), Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh (RM404,343.20), Masjid Alimsah Waley (RM142,000), Masjid Jamek Benggali (RM182,100), Masjid Jamek Perangin (RM17,700), and Masjid Titi Papan (RM27,150). However, Masjid Pintal Tali has not yet submitted complete documentation for funding consideration.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the state government, through George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), has activated the Heritage Building Owners' Support Line for Category I and II structures within the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site. This initiative aims to assist owners, including mosque committees, with restoration works. The maintenance plan focuses on preserving the mosques' historical value, architectural elements, and cultural heritage, ensuring they remain safe and functional. All restoration efforts must adhere to the Conservation Guidelines for Buildings and Sites under the Special Area Plan for the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Mohamad stated this in a written reply to Penaga assemblyman Mohd Yusni Mat Piah (PN) during the Penang State Legislative Assembly sitting. He emphasized that the mosques, constructed between 1801 and 1890, are key heritage assets reflecting the growth and development of Penang's Muslim community. The state government is committed to preserving these structures for future generations.
