Seven Public Hospitals Set for Internet Enhancement Under MCMC Initiative

Bera: Seven public hospitals have been identified for improvements in internet coverage and quality, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching announced. The hospitals earmarked for upgrades include Penang Hospital, Cyberjaya Hospital, Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Terengganu, Alor Gajah Hospital in Melaka, Kuala Lumpur Hospital, Rembau Hospital in Negeri Sembilan, and Tanah Merah Hospital in Kelantan.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is working in collaboration with the Health Ministry (MoH) to address internet access issues in these designated hospitals. Teo shared that after conducting engagement sessions with MoH, a shortlist of seven hospitals was prioritized for immediate improvement. However, she emphasized that other hospitals would also be considered for future upgrades.

The MCMC is currently tackling issues such as unsatisfactory coverage and connectivity problems within the hospital premises. This initiative follows an announcement by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who emphasized that hospitals are a key focus area for resolving connectivity challenges. Many government hospitals reportedly face issues with in-building mobile phone coverage and lack the necessary 5G infrastructure to support medical applications.

Additionally, Teo highlighted that network issues at 17 healthcare facilities in Bera have been resolved, thanks to the introduction of Voice over Fiber (VoF) services. She also commented on the removal of 8,756 pieces of cyberbullying-related content by MCMC in 2024, a significant increase from 1,763 in the previous year. This rise is attributed to heightened public awareness and an increase in complaints filed with the MCMC.

Furthermore, during her working visit to Bera, Teo mentioned that a newly constructed communication tower under the National Digital Network (JENDELA) initiative in Bukit Rok has benefited 700 local residents. She attended interactions with students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Rok and conducted 4G quality service tests from the JENDELA tower.
