Kuching: Sarawak continues to strengthen its energy transition agenda through the implementation of various strategic projects under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) to increase the use of natural gas in the state, said state Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi today. He highlighted ongoing efforts spearheaded by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) aimed at enhancing the gas infrastructure across four major hubs - Miri, Samalaju, Bintulu, and Kuching.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the centerpiece of this initiative is the 500 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) plant in Miri, which has achieved 30 percent progress and is slated to be commercially operational by the fourth quarter of 2027. Meanwhile, the Kidurong-Samalaju Gas Pipeline project, measuring 65 kilometers and supplying 300 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd), is 91 percent complete, with an expected operational date in the second quarter of 2026.
The Gas to Bintulu (GtB) pilot project has been operational since July, delivering piped natural gas to 40 low-income households in Sungai Plan as a direct community resource initiative. In Miri, the Gas Direct to Kitchen initiative continues to expand, with 589 residences already connected to piped gas, and the remaining connections to be completed by the end of 2027.
Julaihi also noted the development of the Virtual Pipeline System (VPS), which will supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Bintulu to Kuching. Expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2026, this system aims to extend gas access to off-grid areas and bolster local industries. Additionally, the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub (KLCH) project will feature a regasification terminal, a low-carbon petrochemical park, gas infrastructure, and a 5,000 MW CCGT plant in Kuching.
