Kuala lumpur: National track cyclist Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom is taking a step-by-step approach in his pursuit of success at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be held from July 23 to Aug 2.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Shah Firdaus stated that the track cycling competition in Glasgow is expected to be highly competitive, with many of the world's top riders set to participate in the quadrennial Games. He emphasized the importance of qualifying and progressing through the rounds, with a focus on strategy only once reaching the finals. Shah Firdaus, who secured a bronze medal in the keirin event at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, shared these thoughts during a visit by Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz, the Chef de Mission for Malaysia to the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, to the national track cycling squad at the National Velodrome.
The 30-year-old cyclist from Muar expressed his desire to avoid unnecessary pressure, preferring to enjoy each phase of training and competition. He views his role as a national athlete as a job, with a commitment to compete rather than merely train. He expressed his enjoyment of both training and racing, stating that there is no pressure and his aim is to have fun in the process.
In addition to Shah Firdaus, Malaysia will be represented in Glasgow by national cycling icon Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, New Joe Lau, and women's riders Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri and Nur Alyssa Mohd Farid. The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will feature 10 sports, including athletics, swimming, track cycling, lawn bowls, boxing, judo, and weightlifting, along with six integrated para sports.
