Sibu Hospital Neurosurgery Now Serves Over One Million People In Central Sarawak

Sibu: The Neurosurgery Department of Sibu Hospital has evolved into a leading regional referral centre providing specialist neurosurgical services to more than one million people across central Sarawak area from the Bintulu to the Betong Division. Deputy Health Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib highlighted the department's efforts in bringing specialist neurosurgical care closer to communities in the region.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Hanifah Hajar emphasized the department's initiatives, which include conducting visiting specialist clinics in Mukah, Bintulu, Sarikei, and Kapit. These efforts aim to reduce patients' financial, logistical, and time burdens, while also improving compliance with follow-up treatment. She praised the department's commitment during her speech at the Transforming Brain Injury Conference 6.0 (TBI 6.0).

Hanifah Hajar commended the department, led by Dr. Nelson Yap Kok Bing, for its contribution to healthcare delivery in central Sarawak. She noted that the department has saved over RM50 million by minimizing the need for costly medical evacuations to Kuching since 2013. She stated that the achievements of Sibu Neurosurgery exemplify what can be achieved through vision, commitment, and leadership.

Furthermore, Hanifah Hajar affirmed that the Health Ministry would continue its collaboration with the Sarawak government, healthcare institutions, universities, and professional bodies. This collaboration aims to strengthen specialist services, enhance healthcare infrastructure, and develop local expertise. She stressed that sustainable healthcare transformation relies not only on infrastructure and equipment but also on investing in healthcare professionals and future leaders.
