Sibu: Sibu Member of Parliament Oscar Ling Chai Yew has called for systematic land classification in the town, with clear identification of areas suitable and unsuitable for development to protect property buyers. His call followed the recent collapse of a shophouse at Jalan Pahlawan and a separate incident involving ground subsidence that affected a row of shophouses.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ling emphasized the need for the Sarawak government, particularly the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, to reassess existing land development conditions and planning in the state. He suggested that, if necessary, the government should review and amend current legislation to ensure long-term safety in the construction sector. This could be achieved through stricter building standards, stronger monitoring, and possible provisions requiring developers to remain liable within a specified defect liability period.

Ling pointed out that geological conditions in Sibu have caused subsidence and structural damage to many buildings, including some aged between 10 and 20 years. He noted that the issue has spread beyond the Bukit Assek area, causing many homeowners to bear repair costs themselves. He stressed the need for a comprehensive solution rather than attributing the problem solely to geological factors.

He also called for stricter enforcement to ensure projects comply with land suitability, suggesting that weak or swampy areas should be designated for alternative uses. Ling mentioned receiving numerous complaints, including cases involving low-income families living in unsafe homes due to subsidence and concerns over abandoned housing projects where buyers continue servicing loans despite incomplete units.
