SMCV Launches Malaysia’s First Educational Stroke Mirror to Boost Awareness

Kuala Lumpur:Sunway Medical Centre Velocity (SMCV) has unveiled Malaysia's first educational Stroke Mirror. This initiative aims to enhance public awareness of stroke symptoms, encourage early intervention, and promote a proactive approach to brain health.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Stroke Mirror was introduced during the 'Brain for Life The Ultimate Mind and Motion Experience' event at Sunway Velocity Mall from October 30 to November 1. The event addressed the critical challenge in stroke care, where delays in recognizing symptoms can prevent timely medical attention.

Through interactive experiences, SMCV aims to help Malaysians better understand the warning signs of stroke and emphasize the importance of quick action. The Malaysia National Stroke Registry Report 2017-2024 indicates that only 36.3% of ischaemic stroke patients reached the hospital within 4.5 hours of symptom onset, underscoring the need for prompt treatment.

The educational Stroke Mirror serves as the centerpiece of the Brain for Life initiative, offering an engaging way for visitors to learn about stroke symptoms and the importance of immediate medical assistance. This reflects SMCV's commitment to making health education accessible beyond hospital settings and into community spaces.

Moreover, the initiative seeks to shift public perceptions of brain health from a reactive to a preventive approach. This involves prioritizing early assessments, risk awareness, and healthier lifestyles. SMCV's CEO, Susan Cheow, emphasized that the Stroke Mirror is part of efforts to make health education engaging and relevant, encouraging Malaysians to recognize stroke warning signs and seek necessary medical attention.

Additionally, SMCV consultant physician and neurologist Dr. Kok Chin Yong highlighted the importance of recognizing stroke symptoms and seeking immediate medical help. He explained that stroke is a medical emergency, with every minute of delayed treatment potentially leading to significant neurological damage.

As part of efforts to extend stroke awareness across generations, SMCV also hosted the FAST Heroes workshop. This educational program, in collaboration with the Angels Initiative, aimed to teach children to recognize stroke warning signs and respond during emergencies.

The Brain for Life event featured complimentary health assessments and consultations with SMCV's Neuroscience team, providing visitors with opportunities to understand their health and neurological well-being. Interactive activities, such as a robotic chess experience and cognitive challenges, encouraged participants to explore cognitive function and brain health.

SMCV stated that the initiative reinforces its commitment to advancing neuroscience care and making preventive health education more accessible to the community. By combining medical expertise, interactive experiences, and community partnerships, Brain for Life encourages Malaysians to take responsibility for their neurological well-being and recognize stroke symptoms early.
