KUALA LUMPUR, National professional mixed doubles Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai’s desire to win their third championship this year was dashed when they had to settle as runners-up in the China Open 2024 today.
In the 72-minute long final at the Changzhou Olympic Games Centre, the husband and wife pair got off to a good start when they won the first set 21-16.
However, the couple’s positive momentum deserted them in the second and third sets as they lost 14-21, 17-21, giving victory to their Chinese opponents, Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping.
“It’s a mixed feeling. We are very satisfied with our performance even though we lost. Both of us really (went) all out, and you can see Soon Huat running all around the court and covering every shot.
“Although we managed to take the first set which gave us confidence, our opponents managed to turn the game around. Even in the third set we were left far behind but we didn’t give up and still supported each other,” Shevon said in an audio recording shared by the Badminton World
Federation (BWF) today.
For the record, the pair ranked 12th in the world had won the Swiss Open last March and the Malaysian Masters in May.
