Special Meeting Held to Address Telecom Coverage Challenges on Highways

Kuala lumpur: A special meeting has been held to discuss efforts to improve telecommunications and internet coverage on highways, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. He explained that the meeting, which included Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), was convened in response to frequent internet coverage interruptions and dropped calls experienced by highway users.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, approximately 50 kilometers of highways, including sections of the PLUS Expressway, West Coast Expressway (WCE), and East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2), have been identified as lacking telecommunications coverage. Nanta announced that the meeting resulted in several key decisions, including the formation of a Special LLM-MCMC Task Force. This task force will be responsible for coordinating a comprehensive action plan, pinpointing critical drop call locations, and assessing the need for new telecommunications infrastructure.

Additionally, highway concessionaires will be engaged to implement both short- and long-term solutions. Regional LLM and state MCMC teams have been conducting site inspections and evaluating power supply facilities necessary for the installation of supporting infrastructure. Nanta also suggested that the MCMC be actively involved in resolving frequency disruptions and supporting the technical requirements for the implementation of the multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system.

He emphasized the importance of addressing this issue, stating that in a digital world, access to the internet and telecommunications is a basic necessity, even when traveling on highways. Nanta reiterated the government's commitment to not only constructing roads but also ensuring that people remain connected smoothly and safely.
