Special Parliament Session to Address US Tariff Hikes on Malaysia – PM Anwar

Kuala Lumpur: A special Parliament session is set to begin on May 5, focusing on the measures taken by the Malaysian government in response to tariff hikes imposed by the United States on the country. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the importance of this session for Members of Parliament to discuss the repercussions of the US tariffs on Malaysia's economy and to strategize solutions.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar highlighted the significance of national unity and economic growth during his speech at the Perlis State Level Aidilfitri MADANI 2025 Celebration. The event, held at Dataran Lok 9 in Kuala Perlis, was also attended by the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail and the Raja Perempuan of Perlis Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Almarhum Tengku Abdul Rashid. Anwar underscored Malaysia's potential to be a leading nation in Asia through collective effort and unity.

Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, remarked on Malaysia's status as the second-largest semiconductor producer globally, with 60 percent of its exports directed to the United States, valued at over RM140 billion. He stressed the importance of maintaining moderate international relations with the US and other countries to safeguard the livelihoods of Malaysians and foster economic growth.

To address the tariff issue, two Malaysian ministers have been dispatched to the United States to engage in discussions with American trade officials, aiming for a more equitable resolution. Prime Minister Anwar reiterated Malaysia's stance against the tariff hike, advocating for adherence to multilateral agreements such as those under the World Trade Organization and the United Nations.

The US tariffs, initially announced by President Donald Trump on April 2, included a 24 percent levy on Malaysian imports. However, these tariffs have been temporarily suspended for 90 days, providing a window for further negotiations and potential resolutions.
