Strong Earthquake Hits Mindanao, Tremors Felt In Sabah

Mindanao: A strong earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale struck Mindanao, the Philippines at 7.37 am today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MetMalaysia reported the earthquake occurred at a depth of 50km, about 97km south of Koronadal City, Philippines. Tremors were also felt in Sabah, involving Tawau, Semporna, and surrounding areas. MetMalaysia is actively monitoring developments in the incident and has made information available to the public through a Facebook post.

Meanwhile, MetMalaysia director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip stated that based on analysis, a tsunami up to 0.4m is expected to hit coastal areas in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak, and Lahad Datu between 10.30 am and 12 pm today. In light of these developments, the public in the affected areas is urged to remain vigilant and comply with instructions issued by the authorities.

Dr Mohd Hisham also assured that MetMalaysia will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates.
