Struggling Artistes: YKAT Calls For Affordable Housing Support

Kuala Lumpur: The Yayasan Kebajikan Artis Tanahair (YKAT) is urging the authorities to consider allocating several People’s Housing Project (PPR) units for veteran artistes who do not own homes. YKAT chairman Datuk DJ Dave highlighted that not all veteran artistes are financially stable, despite having been prominent figures who significantly contributed to the nation’s entertainment industry.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, some of these artistes are currently facing hardships. Many have to live with their children, while others can only afford to rent a single room. Additionally, some have lost their source of income due to health issues, making it impossible for them to own a home. DJ Dave made these remarks during a breaking-fast event where RM1,000 cash donations were given to 13 veteran artistes in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

DJ Dave mentioned that around 16 veteran artistes, including actors, singers, and musicians, are still awaiting approval for PPR housing. He emphasized that providing affordable housing for these artistes is not only a matter of welfare but also a gesture of appreciation for their contributions to the country.

Since its establishment 13 years ago, YKAT has assisted nearly 1,900 veteran artistes through financial aid and social programmes to help ease their burden.
